The hybrid version of the new Volkswagen Jetta has been spied during winter tests at very low temperatures. This is not the first contact with the German model as the Jetta hybrid debuted in front of the audience at the Detroit Auto Show but these are the first shots with the model on the road.
The hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline unit offering 150 horses and 249 Nm of torque but also an electric motor of 20 kW.
Volkswagen plans to introduce a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for the Jetta hybrid which is a premiere for the company as the first hybrid in the range, the Touareg, is equipped with a eight-speed automatic transmission.
Volkswagen says that the combined fuel economy of the model is rated at 45mpg US (5,2 liters/100 km) while the performance figures are decent with an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 seconds. The Volkswagen Jetta hybrid can run fully electric up to speeds of 70 km/h.
