When BMW launched the 1 Series M Coupe lots of people complained about it being watered down by the Bavarians so that it wouldn’t be faster than the bigger brother M3 but there’s an update on it now.

After being taken for a really rigorous track day by German magazine Sport Auto at the infamous Hockenheim tarmac, it turns out the BMW 1 Series M Coupe is still faster than the M3.

Sure, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe’s 3.0 liter straight six twin-turbo doesn’t develop the maximum amount of power it can but the new chassis tweaks are certainly tip top.

Developing a very respectable 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe just misses the mark of acceleration from 0 to 60 and further but not all performance is limited.

Getting back to the Hockenheim experiment, the BMW M3 Coupe managed to clip a 1:14.2 time around the legendary DTM track.

In the same conditions, with the same driver behind the wheel, the lighter and younger 2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe managed a 1:14.1 time.

Sure, the difference given the length of the Hockenheim isn’t that big but the BMW civil war will now begin between these two great performance coupes.
