The BMW Z4 is one of the most successful sports car models that BMW has developed over the last twenty years. In any case, it would seem that it is indeed a highly dependable and solid performance vehicle. However, the 2003-2009 E85/E86 generation Z4 has been reported to have a serious issue with the steering. Still, no recall was issued by BMW after two decades of a severe safety issue.

I have received many emails regarding the known problem of the BMW Z4 model from the 2003-2009 generation with code name E85 for the Roadster version and E86 for the Coupe version. Our readers have told us that they have major problems with the steering column of the BMW Z4 and that BMW has not recalled those cars for this major safety issue after two decades of this well-known problem.

Also, our dear Automotorblog readers have also told us that a lot of important articles about this BMW Z4 problem have disappeared from the Google search engine, where a lot of complaints from owners of this type of car have been reported.

We decided to write about this problem again, to remind you that after 20 years, no recall has yet been made, and we hope that in the shortest time, those from BMW will think about the safety of the fans/owners of this beautiful BMW Z4 from the first generation and to establish a recall for a permanent fix of the problem.

Cause of the Problem

The steering problem seems to stem from the EPS – Electro-Mechanical power steering system that BMW adopted in this generation of the Z4. Lurking near the rack of the steering is a very crucial joint that is rumored to wear out over time, though I understand that this could be caused by performance driving that puts much pressure on this part. When this joint becomes worn, it allows additional movements and looseness into the steering system.

Is It A Severe Issue?

The steering looseness will affect the driveability and the precise handling of the vehicle. However, from my point of view, it has not posed any known safety concerns. So long as inspection and repairs are maintained, BMW Z4 models with high mileage can still be suitable performance cars. However, this is still an unacceptable wear problem in what should be a tightly built BMW steering system.

How to Fix It

This problem can only be fixed with a full steering column replacement. Here are BMW updated replacement part designs. However, it can be a costly affair to fix, especially if it requires more than $1,000 for the spare part and the mechanic’s fee. Some of the owners have also complained that the cost of replacing the Z4’s parts is so high that they prefer selling the car instead of getting it fixed.

No Recall Issued by BMW

However, up to now, BMW has not released any recall for the steering joint wear problem. It has been discussed on online forums for ages, and it is a well-documented issue. Probably BMW has not deemed it risky enough to warrant the expense of a recall campaign. This has left many BMW Z4 owners frustrated to be in a position where they have to pay such a hefty amount for a repair on their own.

Conclusion

It seems that the E85 Z4 steering issue is more about the joint’s design being overly sensitive than the part itself. However, it escalates to become a tedious and perhaps an unexpected responsibility for owners to cater for. It is, however, not a dangerous condition and one needs to be aware of it before buying one of these Z4 models with electro-mechanical steering. Still, it is an excellent sports car; however, setting aside a few bucks for the possibility of repairing the steering issue is advised.

Please write your complaint in the comments below if you are the owner of this model and if you are encountering issues with the steering column of your BMW Z4. Drive safe!
