Just to clear things from the get go, a velomobile is basically a car powered by pedaling, a sort of a hybrid between a car and a bicycle.
A recent such velomobile is called Elf, and has a lot to offer for all those eco-friendly people out there.
Built from aircraft grade aluminium, stainless steel and carbon fiber, the Elf can withstand the rigors of the road. But that is not its best feature by far. The key to the velomobile is its electric motor and solar panels. This give you an alternative to pedaling, and quite a big range.
On a single charge, the Elf can go as far as 72 km on motor only. If you also assist the motor with some pedaling, you can get a range of 160 km easy. Top speed is 32 km/h on motor alone and up to 48 km/h if you also use the pedals. The Elf also has functioning headlights, brakelights and turn signals, even if it is classified as a bicycle. All this for just $9.900.
