The Europeans may not be as fascinated of the pickup idea as the Americans but every now and then each company makes a little one and it doesn’t do too bad.
The latest in the line of compact pickups comes from Fiat, is called the Strada and will go on sale very soon, so they might as well tell us what it’s all about.
First of all, it’s not that new really. The Fiat Strada pickup has been on sale in Brazil for a long time now and is a very successful model over there.
It’s also the place where this little Fiat is going to be produced, at the FIASA plant in Betim, Brazil.
Despite its success at home, it never really took off anywhere else and though Fiat is ready to bring it over to Europe, it will not be available throughout the continent.
Sales of the new car are going to be limited to Italy. In terms of choice, the Fiat Strada offers you plenty as there are three trim levels and three body styles.
You can pick between Working, Trekking and Adventure trim and a short cab, a long cab or even a crew cab.
In terms of engine choice, you only get one but it’s a good one, Fiat’s proven 1.3 liter Multijet diesel with 95 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque.
Vitally, fuel economy of the Fiat Strada pickup is rated at 44.4 mpg US when tested on the EU cycle and has a payload capacity of as much as 1.555 pounds.
