I still remember a certain awareness campaign that wanted to outline the fact that downloading illegal files is equal to stealing. One add had a particular line saying “You wouldn’t download a car.”

Naturally, the reaction was fast, and the most popular response was “I would if I could”.

Well, it seems that the day is finally here where you can actually download schematics and 3D print your own car. To show that this is more than just a exercise in engineering, Local Motors is planning to deliver the first ever fully printed car at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago.

No real details were actually revealed about the vehicle, except the fact that it is supposed to be “purpose-built for the urban transportation needs of Chicago.” So my guess is a tank. Other than that, we will just have to wait and see exactly what the guys from Local Motors have planned for us, and if they can really deliver “stronger, safer, faster, more efficient vehicles.”
