During a financial conference call to review Ford’s performance in the year 2024, the company’s chief executive Jim Farley said that tariffs might be a potential accelerant of the destruction of the automotive industry and consumerism. Earlier this week, the administration of Trump placed a 25-percent tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada and then removed it and replaced it within the same day. Nevertheless, tariffs remain rather risky as they can be introduced again shortly. Every self-employed financial analyst understands that such tariffs would not be beneficial across many aspects of the American economy, particularly in automobiles.

Farley was quite clear with his stance that even a temporary raise in tariffs may not be operationally sustainable in the long run, more so that a consistent rise in tariffs will greatly affect Ford and the automobile industry. Farley also opined, “It is beyond any doubt that the 25 percent tariffs to Canada and Mexico will have a significant negative effect on our sector if the tariffs are sustained.”.

He stated that such a possibility could result in billions of dollars of lost profits, loss of jobs in America, and fluctuations within the whole value system in the automotive industry. Instead, these costs would be transferred to consumers themselves in the form of higher prices of vehicles on the market.

Ford’s performance in 2024 highlights the company’s resilience and strategic focus amid uncertain economic conditions. With regards to Ford Company, it generated full-year revenues of $185 billion and a net income of $5.9 billion. Farley paid special attention to Ford Pro, Ford’s business venture for sales of commercial vehicles and services, which performed exceptionally well. They also noted areas that Ford ought to focus on in terms of smaller vehicles like the Ford Maverick as emerging markets.

Thus, the effects of tariffs are even more acute in this segment. Like most other automotive companies in the United States, Ford’s supply chain system has almost reached three figures for the Ford Maverick, which is assembled in Mexico. Imposing tariffs on these imports could potentially highly impact this existing supply network; this may lead to high production costs and high consumer prices.

Nevertheless, Farley remains rather optimistic when it comes to tariffs, primarily due to the listed factors. He expressed an opinion stemming from an understanding of the Trump administration and leaders of Congress that there exist intentions to support the US auto industry and not the contrary.

The broader viewpoint of tariffs is connected with shifts in emission legislation of vehicles and the transition to electric cars at home and across the world. Much of the pressure in the automotive manufacturing industry can be attributed to competition from the internationals and more specifically from China.

Farley agreed that China had adjusted greatly in the manufacturing of automobiles; he even took a Japanese-made car, which in fact is produced in China, for a test drive. However, in light of these global pressures and regulatory risks, Farley urged that Ford remain on course about the direction of its course.

“We control our future,” he asserted, raising Ford’s challenge to face through a more complex and continuously evolving environment.
