Wow, is the simplest way to describe the way Maserati’s surprising us these days with a new announcement about their development plans.
Having gotten the new Quattroporte off their plate and the Ghibli and Kubang being pretty much sorted out, the Italians are ready to shock us.
Insider sources from the Trident brand are saying the company is working on a brand new car, one that should be at least one class above the GranTurismo.
Now that’s quite the cupcake we need to wrap our heads around. The GranTurismo is a car with plenty of faults, but its charm makes it seem hard to beat.
What we’d normally think of when it comes to a new high end Maserati, we’d imagine that a Ferrari model gets a makeover.
The problem with that theory is that the Italians, on both sides, have denied any chance that Maserati will get to create a follow-up of the MC12.
As a supercar is the natural thing we’re thinking off, we might forget what Maserati is about these days. Since the brand is established and within Ferrari’s family, the chase for performance may not be the most important point.
Comfortable high speed cruising seems to be the new direction. With this in mind, a car borrowing the Ferrari V12 to fight off Aston Martin models should be interesting.
After all, let Ferrari boys have their brutal acceleration and KERS system when us Maserati folk can get a soothing existence.
Whatever they decide to make, it will almost certainly be amazing and evocative at the same time.
