When the original Maybach was built, it didn’t make too many waves, being quickly associated with opulence and low intellect owners. Or, at the very least, that is exactly the impression it left on me.
No matter what you might think about it, one thing is certain: the vehicle fell short of expectations, and the name was soon dropped.
Recent news, however, seems to indicate that Mercedes-Benz will be bringing it back. This name will be reserved for the range topping, long wheelbase, S-Class, and we should be seeing it as soon as this year’s end. It should be interesting to see exactly what the German car maker is planning to do differently for a better result.
We have to take into consideration that the new Maybach will be going up against vehicles like the Rolls-Royce Ghost or the Bentley Mulsanne, a couple of vehicles which have pretty strong foundations, with steady sales and a clear path ahead. Bearing an estimated price tag of $250.000 to $300.000, the new Maybach will have its work cut out for it, and its return will be at best controversial.
