The trend today is building bigger and much more lightweight cars, a philosophy that Audi has also embraced, and that to keep up with the heavy competition from BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Porsche.
After recently unveiling the long-expected 2017 A5 and A6 Coupe, the German based carmaker has also lift the veil of the cabriolet versions, both following most of their siblings characteristics, except for the less performance figures and soft-top system, of course.
Once arriving on the market starting next March, the 2917 Audi A5 Convertible will have a starting price of 49,350 euros, while the S5 Cabrio will be more expensive, meaning 67,800 euros.
In terms of design, the soft-top versions will keep the general features of the coupes, coming with a soft roof that is now activated by a new function, opening at speeds up to 50 km/h, with just 15 seconds needed for the fabric roof to go down.
More than that, to make room for the fabric roof inside the trunk, the convertible versions also come with a slightly longer wheelbase of 14mm, adding thus 18mm of rear legroom. Also, the guy sitting up front next to the driver, gets to enjoy 26mm of extra shoulder room.
The use of lightweight materials have made the convertibles lighter than the coupes with around 40 kg, even if extra materials are used to compensate the lack of the hard top, coming thus with a total of 1,690 kg.
In the engine department, both the 2017 Audi A5 & S5 Convertible are fitted with the same engines as the coupe siblings, meaning a wide range of four- and six-cylinder engines. The most potent mill refers to the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, with 354 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, delivering a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, at a top speed of 250 km/h.
