The North American-based Ford carmaker has implemented a lot of high-tech features and safety gizmos on its new models, and one of them that will become a must on the 2017 Ford Fusion is the so called “Return to Park” system.

This system is designed to add more practicality whenever the driver is distracted from driving and might get injured while getting out the car, for instance.

The car`s sensors sends the data to the driver when he wants to get out of the car and shifts into Park mode if the engine is turned off as well. Or, if the driver forgets to close the door on his way out, or the seatbelt isn’t detached, the system also turns the engine off.

Mark Zyskowski, technical expert at Ford, best explains how the system really works:

“When we decided to go with the new rotary shifter for the2017 Ford Fusion, the team all sat together in a room to see what additional customer benefit we could bring to the table. We thought about what we could add without getting in the way of normal day-to-day scenarios, and all agreed that a feature to help confirm Park is selected when exiting the vehicle seemed really worthwhile.”

There are also other rather unusual situations that the system operates. For instance, if the driver turns the engine off when the car is on the move, then the ”Return to Park” system will shift into Neutral model until the car slows down at a speed of less than 8 km/h, then shifting into Park model immediately.
