The Germans from Volkswagen decided to unveil the hybrid version of the new Jetta sedan at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, one of the most important automotive events which just opened its gates. The strong feature of the new Jetta hybrid is, of course, the average fuel economy of just 5,2 liters/100 km (45mpg US).
Under the bonnet sits a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline unit offering 150 horsepower along an electric motor producing 27 horses. The model uses a seven-speed DSG transmission which transfers the power to the front wheels, a 1,1 kWh lithium-ion battery being used for the electric motor.
The German model can be also driven fully electric at speeds of up to 70 km/h thanks to the parallel hybrid system which lets the driver to use only the electric motor.
With a total mass of near 1,500 kilograms, the Jetta hybrid is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 9 seconds, decent figures for a fuel efficient car.
According to the company, the American and Canadian customers will be able to buy the new hybrid model starting November this year.
